BEFORE, FISH WERE ABUNDANT

Installation

film still, video loop

2019

In collaboration with the Uruguayan video artist Héctor Solari, a video installation is intended to highlight the idea that natural boundaries (the sea) that normally separate or isolate can often become the only sense of freedom. The blockade and the war suffocate the daily life of the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip. This narrowness transforms this small piece of land into an outdoor prison. The only possible outward movement is the view of the sea. The work concentrates mainly on the daily life in the Gaza Strip, it is principally about the feelings of these people. If the sea is the only means to feel freedom, what happens when you are confronted with the idea of a sea barrier - how can you live on with this feeling of suffocation? The presence of a sea barrier also damages the perception of the sea and the horizon as something infinite.
